On February 4, 2025, the sun streamed in through the window of an ordinary apartment in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, and it was calm as if everything was normal. However, in a bedroom on the second floor, there was an unspeakable and strange atmosphere.

The weirdest thing was the sound of water coming from the bathroom.

When people opened the locked bathroom door, the scene in front of them was unbelievable:Xiao E, a 23-year-old Chinese international student, was lying on his side in a bathtub filled with water, motionless. She was covered with a black blanket, her wrists were tightly wrapped with a charging cable, and a broken ceramic desk lamp was pressed under her body.

The police emphasized at the early stage of the investigation that this was not a random incident of violence – Xiao E knew the murderer.

Let us go back to January 13, 2025, that ordinary winter afternoon. Like many young people, Xiao E picked up his mobile phone and swiped his finger on the dating app. She paused when she reached a name—Jack Minh Terry. 22 years old, Asian, handsome, with a gentle smile in the photo.

The two quickly chatted and jumped from the dating app to Instagram. Everything in the virtual world seemed beautiful and safe. Terry’s social image was perfectly packaged: the defense attorney later described him in court as a “gentle soul” who graduated from the University of California, Riverside’s engineering department and seemed harmless.

Who would have thought that underneath this shell that was carefully crafted to look like a “high-quality man” was a cold-blooded and violent nature.

After 20 days of chatting, the two decided to meet. On the evening of February 3, 2025, Terry drove Little E back to her apartment in Newhall in a red Toyota Corolla.

At 11:30 that night, my roommate Mr. M was sitting in the living room watching TV. Through the crack in the door, he saw E entering the bedroom with a boy. He didn’t think much about it, after all, adults have their own boundaries.

At 2:30 in the morning, Mr. M got up to go to the bathroom. Passing by E’s room, he vaguely heard laughter and whispers inside. Everything seemed normal.

At noon the next day, Mr. M went to work as usual. Suddenly, a surveillance alert popped up on the phone—there was movement at the door of the house. He clicked on the real-time video, and what he saw in front of him gave him a chill down his spine: Someone suddenly rolled down the bedroom window on the second floor. A man dropped two bags first, then jumped off. After landing, he glanced back and disappeared out of the camera.

Mr. M didn’t think much about it at the time and even thought the landlord was very open-minded. He sent a relaxed text message to E: “It’s okay for you to invite your friends to spend the night, but don’t climb through the windows next time. Pay attention to safety and don’t scare the neighbors.”

The message was sent, but no reply was received.

At 6:40 pm, Mr. M came home from get off work and found that the window in Room E was wide open and the screen was missing. He began to feel nervous and couldn’t get through the phone. An ominous intuition came to his mind. He found a spoon and gently opened the door.

There were no lights on in the room, it was dark, and everything was neatly arranged. But there was a damp smell in the air, accompanied by the slight sound of water flowing. Mr. M followed the sound to the bathroom. Through the frosted glass, he saw the scene – E lying on her side in the bathtub, water flowing across the floor, a black blanket half covering her body, and broken lamps scattered on the floor.

After the police arrived, E was pronounced dead at the scene.

The autopsy report coldly states:He suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his forehead, stab wounds to his neck, and trauma to his shoulders and legs. The cause of death was “homicide resulting from multiple trauma.”Terry’s DNA and blood were found on the door handles and walls of the bathroom and bedroom.

The breakthrough in the case came from the bravery of a woman.

Terry’s ex-girlfriend Ms. C recognized him when the media announced wanted information. The mother said half-jokingly: “This face looks like your ex-boyfriend.” Ms. C froze when she saw it – she was so familiar with this face that she trembled all over just thinking about it.

Ms. C told the police that she and Terry dated for one and a half to two years and did not break up until 2024. During that relationship, she suffered chronic emotional and physical abuse.

“He was very rough during sex and completely ignored my feelings. Every time we were intimate, he liked to pinch my neck and smile triumphantly.” Ms. C said, “He even poked me in the ribs with an umbrella and secretly filmed the video.”

Because of her young age, she chose to suffer silently and never called the police. It wasn’t until she saw the news of E’s murder that she realized that she had to stand up to prevent more girls from becoming victims.

When the police arrested Terry, they found E’s wallet, ID and mobile phone case in his car.Terry had a healing wound between the fingers of his left hand. Chat records show that he responded cold-bloodedly to his friend’s surprise: “What can I say? I attract the best women.”

In the early days of the case, it was rumored on the Internet that E was dating a middle-aged white boyfriend with a history of violence. However, the police investigation clearly showed that this had nothing to do with this case.

E’s high school classmates recalled that she once dated an older white boyfriend, but that was in 2024. This has nothing to do with the murder in 2025 and cannot be confused.

There are reports that Little E is a student in the field of art. Her parents spent nearly 4 million yuan on her education. She went to a foreign country with her dream to pursue art, but everything came to an abrupt end at this moment.

Currently, 22-year-old Jack Minh Terry is charged with murder and is being held without bail.During the arraignment, he pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his lawyer even tried to lower his bail on the grounds that “prison conditions affect his ability to defend his defense.”

E’s parents came to the United States from China to sit in the court and listen to the brutal details – their daughter’s last struggle, the atrocities revealed by the murderer’s ex-girlfriend – the pain was unimaginable.

This is not just a piece of news about the murder of an international student, but a story about the disguise of human nature. The gentle “soul” on the surface is violent and cold-blooded behind the scenes.

Speaking of this matter, I really can’t help but want to talk to everyone – especially our Chinese students and young friends overseas. Nowadays, people use dating apps a lot, and there’s really nothing wrong with it. Most of the time, they just want to find a friend with whom they can chat, and even hope to have a sweet relationship. I have also heard that many of my friends’ partners came from dating apps.

But we also have to be clear-headed. The person behind the screen may not be the same as in the photo. When you meet someone and chat with each other, you naturally want to meet. This is true, but you really need to be careful before meeting: make an appointment in a public place, tell your roommates or friends where you are going, and don’t take it home with you when you meet for the first time, no matter how “gentle” or polite the other person seems.

Also, if you find that the other person is controlling, violent, or behaves in any way that makes you uncomfortable while chatting, please don’t suppress your intuition, and don’t be afraid of offending others. We are overseas and do not have many familiar relatives and friends around us. It is really important to protect each other.

I say this not to scare you, but to hope that everyone can protect themselves as they would at home. You can have fun making friends and falling in love, but safety comes first.

I hope we can all be alert while retaining our passion for life.
