Steven Lin, a well-known Australian Chinese dentist, broke into a high-end apartment building in Potts Point, Sydney, with a knife last Tuesday and attacked two female residents. He was shot and killed by the police on the spot. He was only 41 years old.
However, what is shocking is that this man once had everything that ordinary people dream of – a mansion, fame, wealth, and a happy family.
What is it that makes a star doctor on the TED stage step by step into the person who died in the laundry room of his apartment with a sharp knife?

Steven Lin was once a top figure in the dental world. He is the author of the best-selling book “The Dental Diet,” which brings the relationship between nutrition and oral health to the public eye.
He took to the TED stage to talk about the connection between dental health and brain function, and he spoke on major talk shows in the United States.
He co-founded Helix Dental Group with his wife Cassandra, also a dental professional, and ran two clinics on the New South Wales Central Coast. The couple lived in a $5 million mansion and had five children.
However, all this collapse came unexpectedly.
At 4:30 a.m. on September 7, 2024, the police found a half-naked, mumbling, and sweating man behind a massage parlor called “Sweet Secrets” in Berkeley Valley – Steven Lin.
The scene at the scene left the police stunned.
At that time, the massage parlor staff were awakened by the noise in the backyard and discovered that Steven Lin was destroying the clothes drying rack. The police arrived at the scene and asked him to put it down many times, but he turned a deaf ear and turned around and made a move that stunned everyone – stuffing suspected feces into his mouth.

At the time of his arrest, the oral health specialist was “disheveled, extremely confused and clearly under the influence of drugs”.
What is even more shocking is that at 6:30 pm on the same day, he showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s residence again, violated the restraining order, and smashed the windows of her home.
Court records reveal the full trajectory of his fall:Four counts of breaching bail conditions, two counts of assault, two counts of choking, multiple counts of stalking and intimidation and breaching a restraining order.
Court documents directly name him: “The defendant is violent toward women and disregards all court-imposed regulations.”
In 2023, his marriage completely broke down after he secretly had a child with someone else.He lived at his parents’ Warlongong home but drugs never left his life.
His wife Cassandra posted on social media, crying every word:
“It’s been two years since my world collapsed. Every week, there’s a new revelation, a new story, a new trauma… I can’t find the words to describe the betrayal, the violence, the deceit.”

Just days before Steven Lin’s death, he appeared in the Wolonggon District Court and was accused of choking and beating a prostitute and stealing $2,000 in cash from her in March 2025. The charges were eventually dropped when the victim failed to appear in court.
At about 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, he broke into the St. Neot Avenue apartment building armed with a knife – for what police determined was a burglary.
He first stabbed a woman in the face with a knife in the laundry room, then forced his way into another woman’s home and attacked herultimately locking himself inside.

Witnesses who lived next door heard a woman repeatedly calling for help and then heard police yelling “put the knife down.”
After two police officers arrived at the scene, Steven Lin still approached with a knife. One officer tried to use a stun gun, but to no avail. Another police officer then opened fire, and Steven Lin died on the spot.
Two victims suffered serious injuries to their faces and heads and were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital. They are currently in stable condition and one of them has been discharged.

Mother-of-three Chloe Paul is one of the victims. Her family said they were able to save her life thanks to her years of boxing training and encouraged all women to learn self-defense skills.
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said the officers involved faced an “extremely violent” situation and the incident caused psychological trauma to them.
At present, the police have set up a major case investigation team to review the entire shooting process.
