The UK government is encouraging parents to talk to their children about harmful content they are exposed to online, as it examines the pros and cons of following Australia’s lead and imposing a social media ban for under-16s.

The British government cited research showing that half of parents have never spoken to their children about harmful content. The Government says the campaign, called ‘Don’t Ask, You Don’t Know’, will provide parents with the support and advice they need to start these conversations.

Science Minister Liz Kendall said she knew many parents were concerned about what their children were seeing and doing online.

She said on Monday the government was determined to give children the childhood they deserve and prepare them for the future.

This is why the government supports parents through this activity and launches relevant consultations to explore how young people can grow up healthily in the social media era.

The British government said the campaign will help parents understand the safety settings of social media platforms and open up conversations about topics such as misinformation and harmful content.

The campaign will be supported through TV advertising and content on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, initially in Yorkshire and the Midlands in northern England.

The campaign comes just weeks after the British government said it was prepared to take strong measures to protect children online, including following Australia’s lead in imposing a social media ban for children under 16.

Relevant British ministers will visit Australia, which implemented a ban in December last year, to study its specific practices.

Kendall said the UK was considering the same age limit standards as Australia.

In recent weeks, Spain, Greece, France, Slovenia and the Czech Republic have also said they are considering similar restrictions. Public attitudes towards some technology products that are considered addictive are becoming increasingly hardline.
