New Zealand Chinese Herald Network Comprehensive Autumn in New Zealand is so romantic! The annual Waikato Hot Air Balloon Festival (Balloons over Waikato) is about to begin.
This is not just a simple hot air balloon show, but also an arena for pilots. It attracts more than 100,000 attendees every year. I have compiled a useful guide for friends who want to go and collect it quickly.

📅 Activity Overview
Date: March 21 – March 28, 2026
Cost: Free admission (except for the Walk-Thru experience)

📍 Key event arrangements
Daily morning flight
Time: 21st-26th, 7:00 AM every day
Location: Innes Common, Hamilton Lake
Highlights: Watching dozens of hot air balloons slowly rising into the sky by the lake, the reflection in the morning light is particularly beautiful. Among them, the 21st is the opening ceremony, the 22nd is the “Catch Money in the Sky” contest, the 24th is the Morning Miracle Cake Day, and the 26th is the Fun Family Day.
Highlight: ZURU Nightglow
Time: 21st 4pm-8pm
Location: University of Waikato
Highlights: The 2026 light-up party will be held on the first day of the festival! The light show starts at 8 p.m., and the balloons will emit fire and light up to the rhythm of the music.
Special reminder: Although it is free, tickets must be booked online in advance. There is no ticket purchase channel on site. Don’t be discouraged if the official website shows that the tickets are sold out. Once someone cancels the ticket, the system will automatically release it in real time. You may be surprised if you swipe it.
Hot air balloon fire show
Time: 6pm – 7:45pm on the 27th
Location: Te Awa, The Base
Watching the pilots operate the flamethrowers up close, the flames soaring into the sky is very spectacular.

Go inside a hot air balloon
Time: Every morning and during Nightglow, and the afternoon of the 28th
Cost: $2 per person
You can actually walk inside a huge hot air balloon and take photos!
⚠️Must-see reminder
-Traffic: Based on experience in previous years, there may be a big traffic jam after the light-up party, because the roads around the venue are narrow and tens of thousands of people evacuate at the same time, which may cause traffic jams for 1-2 hours. It is recommended to book the official free shuttle bus (there are three pick-up points in Hamilton). If you are driving, you can park further.
-Weather: Hot air ballooning has extremely high requirements on wind speed and weather. Whether I fly every morning or whether my party is delayed depends on God. Be sure to check the official website/Facebook for real-time updates before departure to avoid missing out.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it, there’s also the fantastic Wairarapa Balloon Festival (in Masterton, near Wellington) from April 3rd to 6th. I will publish another guide when the time comes!
