New Zealand Chinese Herald website comprehensive report on home security A mother on Auckland’s North Shore intervened to stop a group attack without provocation after she saw a boy being beaten near a shop in broad daylight.
The incident is alleged to have happened at around 4.30pm on February 19 near Shore City Mall on Lake Rd.

The mother, who asked not to be named, said she realized something was wrong when she saw six teenagers chasing a boy.
The woman, who is just 1.55 meters tall, said she intervened in a fight between the boys, who appeared to be between 14 and 18 years old.
Police said they received a report of a disturbance in Takapuna just before 5pm that day.
“Really scary”
The mother said she was walking on the road when she noticed a group of people following another boy.
Her phone was out of battery and she was only minutes away from her car, but she finally decided she couldn’t sit idly by.
She followed the group and heard them say “let’s go get him.”
At first, the man tried to pass it off as a “joke,” but she saw them chasing the boy.
“It was absolutely disgusting to see that child being chased and clearly outnumbered,” she said.
She heard the boy yell “Help, help” before the group finally caught up with him.
Someone was taking video at the scene, but no one else intervened to stop it.
She said several of them kicked him in the legs and tried to knock him to the ground.
Despite the risks, she said it was a completely instinctive reaction.
She rushed between them, stood between them, and shouted at them to stay back.
“At that moment I was really blown away and completely went into ‘Rampaging Old Mother’ mode. I think it kind of broke their momentum and they started to back off a little bit.”
“What I was thinking was that they would be afraid of their mother and would not hit a woman… The boy was shaking all the time and I really felt sorry for him.”
“He was very scared.”
The mother said she then took the boy into the mall for safety and eventually walked him to the bus stop because he did not want to call the police.
She said the alleged perpetrators were still waiting outside and continued to downplay the whole incident as a prank, claiming the boy knew them.
“The boy was too scared to say he didn’t even know them.”
She said the boy had visible red punch marks on his face and later told her the man tried to take his shoes.
Because her phone was out of battery, she did not report the incident to the police until she had charged it and arrived at a safe place.
Police said the disturbance had occurred about 25 minutes before police were notified.
A spokesman said the group appeared to have left the scene before police were called and no further foul play had been confirmed.
The police also said that they have not received any other reports related to this matter.
“Violence for fun”
The mother believes there should be greater public vigilance and increased visible police patrols at bus stops and major gathering points, especially after school hours.
“These boys are being targeted, filmed, humiliated and beaten for fun and for theft. If adults don’t come forward and if communities don’t speak out, this will only continue to happen.”
“You can’t stand by and watch a child get beaten,” she said.
She also said parents need to know this is happening so they can remind their children to stay in groups as much as possible and report similar incidents as soon as possible.
“This is organized, opportunistic behavior specifically targeting teenage boys in public places, often near transport hubs.”
“This was a blatant daylight offense that was escalating.”
