In less than two weeks, two dangerous patients ran out of the same mental hospital one after another. One stabbed innocent passers-by on the street with a knife, and the other stole a car and hit two women to death.
According to reports, an Asian grocery store in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, suddenly staged a shocking scene around 10am on Tuesday. A man armed with a 30cm long kitchen knife rushed into the store and committed a murderous spree, killing one person and injuring two others.
Surveillance video showed that the 25-year-old suspect Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa walked to the checkout counter, suddenly took out a long knife and attacked a 47-year-old woman, stabbing her in the neck.

Witness Joseph Ruissi described the bloody scene: “Blood poured out from the side of her neck and chest, and she kept coughing up blood from her mouth.”
He then attacked a 21-year-old man in the store.

The attack did not end there. The killer then rushed out of the store and continued his attack on the sidewalk of the shopping street.
Amamuddin Sadar, 38, tried to take refuge in the stairwell, but was eventually stabbed and died of his injuries.

Sardar, the eldest of five children, came to Australia as a refugee from Afghanistan in search of a safer life.
What’s even more heartbreaking is that his parents are still in Afghanistan and have been hospitalized after hearing the news of their son’s death.
Leaaetoa, who was arrested by police in the backyard of a nearby property, was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder causing harm and did not apply for bail when he appeared in court on Wednesday.
What’s even more shocking is thatThe murderer turned out to be a patient who had just escaped from the mental hospital 10 days ago.

The Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed the suspect was receiving acute treatment for complex mental illness.
“The individual escaped while being transferred to a hospital for further medical evaluation,” the health district said. The hospital said it notified police and contacted his family, but all attempts to contact him were unsuccessful.
What’s even more outrageous is,Just days after Laaetoa’s escape, another patient, Luke Francis, escaped from the same hospital.
Francis “overpowered and threatened” a nurse before escaping, then took the access card. He then stole a car on February 14, triggering a police chase.

After a 40-minute escape, he collided with another car in Camden, killing two women.
Francis was charged with 11 offences, including two counts of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving.

In just 24 hours, two mentally ill patients with social risks escaped from the same hospital, resulting in the tragedy of three people dying and many others injured.
The nurses union revealed a shocking fact:Cumberland Hospital, one of the largest mental health facilities in the country that treats the most complex patients, has only three security guards on staff at any one time.
Even if it is a shift, such a small manpower cannot be arranged at all. There is a chronic shortage of medical staff and the system is on the verge of collapse. Tragedy strikes when dangerous, incapacitated patients roam the streets of Sydney.
The New South Wales Government has announced that it will conduct a comprehensive review of hospital security measures.
Sydney’s street safety issues don’t stop there. Coincidentally, at about 3 a.m. on February 18, a terrorist attack also occurred at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Pitt Street in Sydney CBD.
Three Korean men were suddenly surrounded by a group of young men. One of the attackers took out a hammer from his bag and hit the victim multiple times.

The video showed that the beaten South Korean man raised his hands in an attempt to defuse the situation, but the attacker did not give up. The victims, aged 23, 28 and 29, were treated by ambulance crews at the scene.
The attackers, who included white and Middle Eastern men, fled the scene before police arrived.
One of the victims said on social media afterwards: “I was almost killed by a hammer. I don’t hate Australia, I just hope they can develop in the right direction and respect everyone.”
Faced with the question of “why not fight back”, he responded that violence is not the solution to the problem. “They are just kids who need to find the right direction and support in life.”

Witnesses said that the incident started from the attacker’s provocation. One of the Korean men, because of poor English, may have responded without fully understanding the other party’s provocative intentions, and the situation immediately got out of control.
Police described the incidents as “extremely disturbing”. From patients escaping from mental hospitals armed with knives to attacks on the streets who suddenly pull out hammers, safety issues are worrying.
The successive violent incidents have sounded the alarm to citizens. People must be vigilant and pay attention to personal safety when going out.
