In early January this year, Ms. Margaret Marsilla from Ontario, Canada received a call from her lawyer:
The lawyer told Marsilla that her 26-year-old son Kiano Vafaeian had successfully sought euthanasia days earlier. The cause is seasonal depression……

Marsilla was so shocked that she couldn’t believe her ears:
She knew that Vafaeian was depressed in the winter. He had been like this for four or five years, and his family had blocked his euthanasia application for a time, but the medical system finally approved it? !
In addition to grief, Marsilla decided to seek justice for her son’s death. She accepted interviews with mainstream media and posted a long post on social media, telling the outside world the details of Vafaeian’s application for euthanasia.
She called on the government to reform euthanasia, fill the approval loopholes, and prevent medically assisted death (MAID) from becoming a tool to “kill disabled and vulnerable people”!

(Vafaeian)
Vafaeian was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. He takes injections of insulin every day and has been dealing with various complications of diabetes while growing up.
When he was 17 years old, Vafaeian had another serious car accident, which not only disrupted his college plans, but also dealt a serious emotional blow to him.

The house leaked and it rained all night. In 2022, he lost all the vision in one eye due to retinopathy caused by years of diabetes, and only 70% of the vision in the other eye remained. He can be considered blind legally.
This incident gave Vafaeian a further blow. He has since suffered from seasonal depression, which has a severe attack in winter. He is depressed and decadent. He feels that life is boring, and he even thinks about using Canada’s euthanasia procedure – medically assisted death (MAID).
Fortunately, my family keeps a close eye on me.As long as they survive the winter, Vafaeians are still very positive in the summer.

(Vafaeian’s euthanasia application was rejected)
In 2023, Vafaeian tried MAID for euthanasia for the first time and even made an appointment in Toronto.
Fortunately, his mother Marsilla accidentally discovered the email and prevented Vafaeian from further action.
Vafaeian was still very angry at the time, believing that his mother had “violated” his right to choose death.
However, in the next year, Vafaeian’s condition improved significantly. In 2024, he took the initiative to move back home, and his relationship with his parents became increasingly harmonious.
All this made Marsilla relax her vigilance, thinking that her son would get better, and gave up the idea of euthanasia.

However, these are all appearances,Vafaeian never seemed to give up on the idea of euthanasia.
In September last year, Vafaeian proposed moving to Toronto, and his mother rented an apartment for him.
Vafaeian happily moved in and texted his mother:
He was looking forward to a new chapter in his life and said he was saving money to travel abroad.
By October, he completed another 30 fitness personal training classes. In mid-December, he also posted beautiful photos of his vacation in Mexico on WeChat Moments. Everything seemed normal.
However, in the next ten days or so, Vafaeian secretly flew from Mexico to Vancouver and tried to apply for the MAID program again. After contacting multiple doctors and being rejected, he finally turned to a doctor named Wiebe and successfully obtained the approval.
On December 30, Vafaeian successfully performed euthanasia, ending his life at the age of 26.

Days later, Marsilla received notification of her death from her lawyer. After devastated, the mother became extremely angry about Canada’s medically assisted dying (MAID) approval process.
She believes that there is a big loophole in the current MAID approval process:
Under current regulations, only terminally ill patients, or those suffering from a “serious and irreversible” disease, can be approved for euthanasia.
Patients with simple mental problems cannot be approved for euthanasia.
But with the help of a doctor, Vafaeian applied for a package of diabetes and blindness + seasonal depression, and was finally approved!

This is hard for mother Marsilla to accept:
“Four years ago, we successfully prevented his euthanasia in Ontario and got him help.”
“This time we failed to stop him. This is not medical care, this is a complete failure of ethics, responsibility and humanity.”
“The real protection for patients should be to contact their families and provide more different treatment options!”
Marsilla’s anger was also directed at Wiebe, the doctor who approved MAID, believing that her attitude towards euthanasia was too radical.
Because Wiebe once proudly stated in an interview that assisting in euthanasia was the best job she had ever done:
“I delivered over 1,000 babies and helped over 500 patients die.”
“I have a very strong, passionate desire for human rights, and I’m willing to risk it for people’s right to die, just like I risk my life for abortion rights.”
When asked how to determine whether a patient qualifies for MAID, Wiebe had this to say:
“We have long and interesting conversations about what makes the patient’s life worth living – and then the patient decides when enough has been lived”.
There is no resurrection after death, so Vafaeian finally left resolutely, leaving his mother Marsilla with a long regret.

(The number of euthanasia approved in Canada is increasing year by year)
However, Canada has one of the highest medically assisted mortality rates in the world, accounting for 5.1% in 2024, with a total of 16,499 deaths.
The current trend is that the approval of euthanasia is becoming more and more relaxed. Can Marsilla’s personal efforts really change the general trend of Canadian society?
