Who is the real “good school”?

Every year, Metro releases Auckland High School results list. But the definition of a “good school” depends on who has the highest NCEA score? Can students be sent to world-renowned schools or can they cultivate comprehensive development young talents?

Some schools are famous for their academic achievements, some are good at sports and art, some focus on value shaping and community contribution, and some are popular because of their diverse cultural or traditional backgrounds. For students and parents, school choice is often the result of multiple considerations: they hope that their children will have good grades, and they also hope that their life experience will be more than exam scores.

In this analysis, Metro focuses on the most comparable and easiest indicator – academic achievement. The following is a complete review of the 2023 Auckland High School NCEA scores compiled based on the latest and complete data from the Ministry of Education. It should be noted that some schools that offer Cambridge or IB courses may not fully reflect their NCEA scores due to student diversion.

Socio-economic gap and admission rate

Data shows that family economic conditions have a significant impact on university enrolment (UE). The better the economic conditions, the higher the admission rate. The UE rate for wealthy community schools is close to 100%, while the high-poverty index areas may be less than 20%. Since the abolition of the school district level (Decile) system in 2023, the Ministry of Education has switched to the Equity Index to allocate funds. The higher the index, the more socioeconomic barriers students face.
