A diner revealed that she and her husband left angrily after seeing the “outrageous” price of a “basic” breakfast menu item in a “very ordinary” cafe in Sydney.
The couple from Sydney came to a cafe in Manly but were stunned by the price of “luxury breakfast” up to $35.
The meal consists of two potato cakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, avocado, roasted tomatoes, toast and mushrooms. “A$35 for a luxury breakfast?” she wrote in a Reddit post.
She explained that they thought the cafe was “nothing special”, but they immediately felt that the breakfast was so expensive.
Not surprisingly, the woman added that they finally decided not to dine in the store.
“My husband and I thought the place was cute, the decoration was nice and it was very lively,” she said. “But after sitting down and looking at how ordinary the menu was, we left.”
The comment section of the post quickly attracted hundreds of comments.
While many agree with the woman’s anger at the price of breakfast, others think that it shouldn’t be a surprise at all in a popular seaside suburb.
“In Manly’s cafe, this is the first mistake you make.” A netizen replied.
“Dining out is expensive, especially by the beach.”
Although she chose not to criticize the cafe by name, there was a local who knew clearly which one the woman was patronizing.
“It looks cute, there is always a constant stream of people coming in and out, and is located in a busy area with a large traffic, so it can attract a large number of tourists,” the local explained.
“But to be honest, it only offers a wide variety of but very ordinary dishes.”
However, the local suggested visiting Manly’s other “very great cafes and restaurants”.
Online discussions have gradually turned to a broader topic—Enjoying a café breakfast has become so expensive.
However, rather than anger, the overall discussion shows more understanding: in recent years, cafe operators have had to raise prices to cope with rising expenses.
Unfortunately, this does mean that the “little luxury of having a coffee shop breakfast” is no longer feasible for many people.
A replied understanding read: This is also the main reason why I avoided breakfast in the cafe. But this is not all their fault. The increase in overtime pay, rent, water and electricity and other expenses over the weekend has exceeded inflation.
Another said: “Most of the money you pay is spent on rent and labor, and the actual cost of ingredients is probably the least. If you can’t afford the restaurant price, just make it at home.”
Someone else said, “If you choose to go out for breakfast, how much do you think a hearty breakfast will cost? …If you want to save money, eat it at home.”
