According to the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) released by the Institute for Economics and Peace, New Zealand ranks third among 163 independent countries and regions, becoming one of the safest countries in the world. This result is improved from the fifth place in 2024.

The index covers 99.7% of the world’s population and conducts a comprehensive assessment from the aspects of “social security and public security, domestic and international conflicts, and military level”.

GPIIt is the world’s first and most comprehensive peace index, and has been widely cited by the United Nations, the World Bank, international policy research institutions, media and academic circles. Many governments will also use it as a reference for national security and foreign policy.

Iceland has been at the top of the list since 2008 and is still ranked first this year; Ireland ranks second.

China ranks 98th, lower than Rwanda (91), Cambodia (87), and Thailand (86th).

The report stressed that since World War II, many factors that have led to large-scale conflicts have risen to new highs, global military spending has continued to increase, geopolitical tensions have intensified, traditional alliances have collapsed, and economic uncertainty has risen.

Currently, there are 59 ongoing inter-country conflicts around the world, the highest record since the end of World War II, and three more than in 2024.

From a regional perspective, Western Europe and Central Europe are still the most peaceful regions in the world, with eight countries in the top ten coming from this region. The Asia-Pacific region has firmly ranked second most peaceful since 2017, and New Zealand’s ranking undoubtedly further highlights its security and stability advantages in the region.
