Last year, a 33-year-old Chinese citizen with a student visa was accused of sprinkling hot coffee at a nine-month-old baby boy in Brisbane Park, causing severe burns.

The Daily Mail reported the latest progress in the case on Sunday, and the man involved may be unable to be extradited back to Australia for trial, and his motive for committing the crime was suspected to be rejected for visa extension.

At noon on August 27, 2024, Luka, a 9-month-old baby boy, was splashed with hot coffee by a man while playing in Hanlon Park in Stones Corner. Luka suffered severe burns on his face and body.

The baby underwent four surgeries due to scalding on the face, arms and legs. The man who splashed hot coffee took the opportunity to flee from Sydney to China after committing the crime.

Since then, Australian police have been hoping to extradite the man back to Australia for trial. However, Chinese law stipulates that Chinese citizens are not allowed to be extradited overseas for prosecution for suspected crimes overseas.

It is understood that Queensland police have transferred detailed evidence against the man to Chinese authorities.

Queensland police said they remained determined to “find a solution” after successfully identifying the man for a few months.

Luka’s parents said the child was still receiving treatment, “to relieve scars, Luka still needs regular surgery, laser treatment and skin acupuncture.”

“The scar is on his chin, shoulders and back, but other than that, he recovers well.”

Surveillance cameras captured the man fleeing Hanlon Park within minutes of the incident.

The video shows that at the time of the incident, the man slowly approached Luka, then sprinkled hot coffee at him, and then ran away from the scene.

The man is believed to have driven to Sydney and boarded his departure flight on August 31.

Initially, Australian police provided the man’s wrong name to the public. It was not until he left Australia that the police confirmed his true identity.

The Daily Mail reported that the attack was caused by the man’s visa extension being refused. The report said the 33-year-old man has been in Australia since 2019 and has worked in warehouses and slaughterhouses at different times.

Queensland police and the Australian Border Defense Department have been in contact with China about the whereabouts of the man.
