Prince Harry, who is increasingly alienated from the British royal family, has recently been reported to have intentionally changed his surname to his mother Diana’s maiden name “Spencer”, trying to further draw a clear line with the royal family. According to the British “Sunday Mail”, Harry has held private talks with his uncle and Earl of Spencer on the matter.

Harry, 39, has the official title of Duke of Sussex. The current surname is “Mountbatten-Windsor”. This surname originates from the family combination of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. It is a common surname for members of the royal family and their descendants. His two children, Prince Arche and Princess Lilibe, also use this surname.

Sources pointed out that when Harry returned to the UK recently, he expressed his idea of changing his surname to his uncle and discussed the relevant procedures. However, it is said that Count Spencer did not agree with this, believing that changing surnames faces many difficulties in both legal and practical operation, and advised Harry to think twice before doing it.
People familiar with the matter revealed that the dialogue between Harry and his uncle was “friendly” but the move is still seen as the latest manifestation of his tension with the royal family.Once the surname is changed, it may not only anger King Charles III of England, but also intensify the rift between him and Prince William, the heir to the throne.
If the change of surname is finally implemented, it means that Harry’s children may also change their surnames accordingly. For example, her daughter will likely change her name from “Lilybe Diana Mountbatten-Windsor” to “Lilybe Diana Spencer”, further emphasizing the emotional tribute to the late princess Diana. Royal biographer Tom Bower once pointed out that Harry’s wife Meghan has always regarded being the “second Diana” as a life goal.
However, for King Charles, it was undoubtedly a heavy blow. As a loyal follower of his father, Prince Philip, Charles deeply agrees with the symbolic significance of the family surname “Mountbatten”.

As early as 1947, Prince Philip abandoned his original Greek and Danish royal identities and changed his surname to “Mountbatten”. In 1960, he decided with Elizabeth II that his children would use “Mountbatten-Windsor” as their official surname.
According to the current regulations of the British government, people can freely change their names without going through legal procedures; but if they want to change official documents such as passports and driver’s licenses, they still need to go through legal documents such as “deed poll”, which is relatively cumbersome.
It is generally believed that Harry’s action will add variables to the already complex relationship between him and the royal family.
